Harry Leslie Stanton

Age: 22

Sex: male

Date: 1 Feb 1929

Place: Netherton Tunnel, Dudley

Harry Leslie Stanton was found dead on the Great Western Railway line near the entrance to the Netherton Tunnel in Dudley near Dudley Station.

He was a constable and had his staff out at the time. It was found across his chest and it was thought that he might have been engaged in a scuffle at the time.

At his inquest the deputy police surgeon ruled out foul play say that his injuries were more consistent with him having been hit by a passing train.

No engines or coaches were found with traces of blood on them.

One of his brother's said that Harry Stanton didn't have a care in the world.

The Coroner stated that the case must remain a mystery. However, he stated that he thought that the injuries could have been caused by a metallic object held in someone’s hand. He noted that there was no evidence that Harry Stanton was in such trouble that he would have wanted to have taken his own life.

An open verdict was returned.
