Dora Mary Smith

Dora Mary Smith was thought to have been run over.

She was a boarder at Stanley House on West Street in Epsom.

It was thought that she might have been walking a foot away from the rough footpath and had turned round when the car approached. A stockbroker who found her body said that he thought that the car would probably have been travelling at thirty miles an hour or more and that the front wing had caught her stomach and then the handles had torn across her chest.

The police said that they were unable to find anyone responsible for knocking her down.

A doctor said that her death would have been instantaneous and caused by shock following internal haemorrhage. He also said that it appeared that she had been dragged along the ground. He said that there was no question of an assault.

Dora Smith's mother said that Dora Smith was very high strung and was also short sighted and inclined to be careless.

A man who also lived at Stanley House said that as far as he knew Dora Smith was not careless at all and added that she had no friends at all. He also said that in his opinion she mentally deficient. He said that she suffered from depression and hallucinations and that she thought that people in heaven talked to her. He said that he had heard her in conversation with people who were quite imaginary.

An open verdict was returned.
