Ernest Newbury

Ernest Newbury was found drowned in a canal.

He disappeared on the Tuesday evening, 8 October 1929 after visiting a boot repairing shop in Boyer Street where he bought some leather to mend his children's boots.

He was a railway fitter for the Derby LMS and had lived on Harrison Street in Derby with his wife and two children.

He was found two weeks later in the canal at Chaddesden on 21 October 1929.

His wife said that she last saw him on 8 October 1929 at 7.15pm and said that although he had been run down recently he had never been depressed.

Between his disappearance and the time he was found in the canal searches were made for him. On the Wednesday several people said that they had seen him in the Chain Lane, Uttoxeter Road and Manor Road district but said that at the time they had not known that he had been reported missing. The Sinfin Moor and Normanton Recreation areas were intensively searched by relatives and friends.

Ernest Newbury was a Deacon at Green Lane Baptist Church. Friends and church members searched the fields and lanes together as far over as Mickleover.

His wife collapsed during the search under the strain but said that she was confident that he had lost his memory and that he would be found.

At his inquest, an open verdict of Found Drowned was returned.
