Mary Massey

Age: 26

Sex: female

Date: 28 Jan 1914

Place: Great Northern Road, Derby

Mary Massey died from a suspected illegal operation.

She died on 28 January 1924. From statements that she had given before she had died it was thought that she had undergone an illegal operation but the medical evidence failed to corroborate that and an open verdict was returned.

Mary Massey's sister said that when she spoke to Mary Massey she had told her that she knew that she was not going to get better and that an illegal operation had been carried out on her by a person that she didn't know.

Mary Massey's aunt also said that Mary Massey had told her that she had had an illegal operation, as did the doctor.

A doctor at the infirmary said that the cause of death was general peritonitis. However, he could not find evidence of the use of an instrument on her or any evidence of an operation.
