Jane Moore

Age: 65

Sex: female

Date: 1 Jan 1914

Place: Long Arch, Knagshill, Surrey

Jane Moore was found lying in the road on 1 January 1914.

She was found injured in the road and was taken to a nearby cottage where she soon died. She had earlier left her house to go out for a walk.

It was first thought that she had been knocked over by a car and the incident had been called the 'Red Motor Car Mystery', but after hearing from half-a-dozen witnesses at the inquest no one was able to definitely connect any car with her death.

Her skull, ribs and breastbone were fractured and the medical opinion was that her injuries might have been caused by a motor-car.

A hedge trimmer said that he had earlier seen a green car with a khaki hood pass along the road going at about 10mph just before she was found.

It was later suggested that she might have fallen from a height.

She was the wife of an army pensioner.
