James Hunter

Age: 32

Sex: male

Date: 1 Dec 1914

Place: Birdcage Walk, London

James Hunter was found unconscious in Birdcage Walk in London on 17 November 1914 and later died in hospital on 1 December 1914.

He had been a cabinet maker and had arrived in London from Edinburgh to join his regiment on 16 November at the Wellington Barracks.

When he was found he was about three feet from the kerb and had a fractured skull, bruises on his shoulder and a bruise on his right forehead.

One constable said that he found an irregularity with the kerb where he was found to suggest that he might have stumbled. However, a detective found a button from his tunic 15 feet away from where he was found and also marks on his tunic that suggested that he had been thrown to the ground with some violence.

The Coroner said that the facts suggested that he might have been caught unawares by a motor-car.

An open verdict was returned.
