Unknown Woman

Age: 25

Sex: female

Date: 10 Feb 1914

Place: Reddish

The body of an unknown woman was found drowned in the canal at Reddish.

She was described as good-looking, well dressed and apparently respectably connected.

At the Coroner's inquest a juryman asked if there was any truth in the rumour that a man had been seen running away from the spot at the time. However, the Coroner stated that there was no evidence that there was anyone else near the canal at the time.

The Coroner said that it was an extraordinary case and they could not say whether she had accidently tumbled into the water, whether there was a struggle and she had been pushed into the water, or whether she had committed suicide.

An open verdict was returned.
