Benjamin Vezey

Benjamin Vezey was found dead on a railway line.

He had been cut to pieces by an express train whilst walking along the permanent way. His body was discovered on the line by an engineer from Bathampton as he was crossing the bridge at Bathford.

A policeman said that Benjamin Vezey had travelled from Batheaston to Bathford at 11.30 and said that it would not have been a convenience for him to have then walked the line from Bathford to Box.

The driver of the 9.15 express passenger train from Paddington to Bristol said that when his train got to Bath he examined his engine and found that it had blood on it. He said that neither he or his stoker saw anyone on the line at Bathford but said that he remembered feeling a slight bump when nearing Bath.

His brother said that he had had no troubles but his sister-in-law said that he had recently complained that he was not feeling well.

The jury returned a verdict of found dead on the railway line.

He was a soap and candle manufacturer and a cricketer from Hill View, Box, Wiltshire, and had left an estate behind with a gross value of £2,709 5s. 10d., with net personalty nil. The probate to his will was given to his widow who was a sole executrix.
