The body of a newly-born child was found wrapped up in a brown paper parcel in a ditch at Hull.

It was found in a ditch between Springhead Road and Cottingham Junction by a platelayer.

The parcel was tied up with string and white tape.

The doctor said that there were no marks of violence but that both lungs were inflated and that the child had had a separate existence but had only lived for a few minutes. He said that death was due to exhaustion consequent upon inattention at birth. He said that the child appeared to have been dead for about four or five days.

The parcel was found near a railway line and the Coroner asked whether it could have been thrown from a train but was told that there were no passenger trains on that line.

An open verdict was returned.
