Ramnit Chander

Age: 32

Sex: male

Date: 10 Feb 2011

Place: Sussex Road, Southall, West London

Ramnit Chander was found dead at his flat in Southall on 10 February 2011.

A man was arrested for his murder but there are no known charges, trials or convictions.

He was found at a property on Sussex Road in Southall at 5.45pm by his landlord.

At first it was thought that his death was not suspicious but his post-mortem later revealed that he had been assaulted and the police said they were treating his case as murder.

Ramnit Chander had been an Indian national and had come to the UK from Bhagtana Tullian in Punjab about ten years earlier. The police said that they knew little about his lifestyle and appealed for people in the local Indian community to come forward. A detective said, 'At present details regarding Pundit's life, and the events leading up to his death, are sketchy. As such we are particularly keen to speak to the local and Asian community who may have known Pundit through local businesses and places of worship. I understand that there may be people who feel uncomfortable speaking to the police for various reasons, such as language barriers. I need to stress that we have Urdu and Punjabi-speaking officers on hand, and we will ensure that witnesses are properly supported'.

It's unclear why the detective referred to Ramnit Chander as Pundit.
