Daniel Duke

Age: 22

Sex: male

Date: 3 Nov 2009

Place: Alberta Street, Walworth, South London

Daniel Duke was shot in Alberta Street, Walworth at about 6.45pm on Monday 2 November 2009 and taken to a south London hospital where he died the following day, in the early hours of Tuesday 3 November 2009.

Three men aged 19, 20 and 21, were tried for his murder but acquitted.

His post mortem stated that his cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

After being shot, Daniel Duke was able to stagger a short distance to a house in Ambergate Street where he knocked on the door and then collapsed in the hallway. It was noted that before he collapsed that he had been able to call 999 and tell the operator that he had been shot.

Witnesses that heard the shooting said that they heard footsteps shortly before and that after that they saw a Silver Ford Mondeo car speed off. The Silver Ford Mondeo car was later found burnt out in Peckham, south London. It was thought that he had been shot by two masked gunmen.

The police said that they had found CCTV of two men that were seen at a petrol station in Camberwell Road, Camberwell shortly after 10pm on the night of 2 November 2009 buying petrol in a green canister and appealed for them to come forward so that they could be eliminated from the investigation. It was noted that the petrol station was close to where the Silver Ford Mondeo car was later found burnt out.

The gun that was used in his murder was later traced to an 18-year-old youth in Walworth who had been hiding it and ammunition. The gun was found in his bedroom in November 2009 during the search for Daniel Duke's murder. He said that he had been asked to hide it for an unknown man. He was convicted for possession of it and sentenced to 3 years 6 months.

The two other men that were tried for his murder were acquitted in November 2010 at a trial at the Old Bailey.

The police operation into his murder was called Operation Traxler.

Twenty months after his murder the police released a statement saying, 'We are now 20 months on from Daniel's murder and his family has received no justice. Our investigation continues and we need more information and more people to come forward and tell us anything which may help us to find Daniel’s killers. I believe people in this area know why Daniel was shot and who is responsible. Without this information Daniel's killers are still at large'.

Daniel Duke was described as a small-time drug dealer.
