Freddie Moody

Age: 18

Sex: male

Date: 17 Jul 2008

Place: Guildford Road, South Lambeth

Freddie Moody was stabbed in Guildford Road, South Lambeth on 17 July 2008 after being lured out of his house with a phone call.

He had been attacked by between six to eight hooded people that had approached him on bicycles. Three of them were later convicted of violent disorder relating to the incident but no one was convicted of his murder. The three were initially charged with his murder. They had been 17, 18 and 23 years old

Freddie Moody had been stabbed in the abdomen.

It was thought that he had been attacked following a row over a water fight in Holland Park and was noted for having been photographed there holding a water pistol with a group of people shortly before. The water fight had been held at the organised Summer Splash event in the park. The photograph had been taken at 4.48pm on the day he was murdered.

It was said that he had been involved in a row with a gang in the park and that the gang later attacked him after he had gone home to change out of his wet clothes. He had got home at about 6.30pm and changed his clothes, after which he got a telephone call and told his mother that he was, 'popping out to see his friend quickly and would be back in no time'. However, he was attack soon after.

Witnesses heard the attackers shout, 'leave him for dead', before riding off.

He was attacked around 7pm and afterwards managed to stagger off a few hundred yards. He was then taken to St Thomas Hospital but died there soon after at 8.15pm.

It was reported that it was thought that the gang had had beef with Freddie Moody, however, the motive for the attack was not known.

It was heard that the gang had punched and kicked him to the ground, after which one of them had stabbed him.

After the murder the three men fled to Brighton, but were said to have confessed their part in the attack to friends.

At the trial of the three men for violent disorder, the prosecution said, 'they did not wield the knife, neither did they know that one of their companions had a knife, nor that their attack on Freddie Moody would have such tragic consequences'.

When the three men were convicted of violent disorder, the judge said, 'Your victim was rendered defenceless and the killer was able to stab and kill him. Your acts brought about the situation in which the killer was able to stab him'.

After he sentenced the men the judge said, 'A group of about five or six of you carried out what I am satisfied was a premeditated attack in broad daylight. Shortly before this attack [the victim] received a phone call and told his mother he was going outside for a few minutes. He was about to have his supper. I am satisfied he was lured out of his home on the pretext of meeting somebody and was waiting just around the corner when the group arrived. You chased and caught him, kicked and punched him to the ground and then carried out a violent and sustained attack upon him. In the course of the attack one of your group produced a knife. It was used to stab him in the chest. The person who did that has not been identified. Young men like you must understand the courts will not tolerate this level of violence particularly carried out on the streets in broad daylight in arrogant disregard for the feelings of members of the public who happen to be around'.

Freddie Moody was said to have previously enrolled on a business course but to have pulled out due to 'pressure from his gang mates'.
