Shaham Ali

Age: 30

Sex: male

Date: 1 Mar 2003

Place: Waverley Road, Small Heath

Shaham Ali was shot in the head on 17 March 2003. He later died on 24 March 2003 in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Two men were tried for his murder but acquitted.

He had travelling in a Honda Civic car with several other men on Waverley Road that had stopped and he had got out to use the telephone booth there when a Volkswagen Golf car with a group of other men pulled up and shot at them. Shaham Ali was shot in the head with a shotgun whilst another man that he was with was shot in the shoulder but survived.

It was said that the shooting was related to a falling out earlier over alleged misconduct at the Birmingham Central Mosque. It was heard that in early 2002 the mosque secretary had left. It was said that he had behaved disgracefully and had shown great disrespect to the Iman at the mosque. It was said that the Iman at the mosque had secretly married a second wife but that there had been problems with the relationship and the secretary was accused of having an affair with the second wife and making her pregnant. As such, the mosque secretary was demonised by the Iman’s followers and left. It was said that he was either expelled or had become ostracised.

It was said that then, later in February 2003, some people that were loyal to the Iman invited the ex-mosque secretary to a house where they assaulted him for over an hour and a half and humiliated him. The assault was said to have included removing the ex-mosque secretary's lower clothing.

Shaham Ali was a supporter of the secretary and had been with three other men in the Honda Civic car that also supported the secretary. The shooting happened after they had driven along Waverley Road and stopped to use a telephone booth. Shaham Ali was using the phone when the Golf car came by and one of the men in the car shot at them with a shotgun, hitting Shaham Ali and another man in the shoulder. The man that was shot in the shoulder was Azmat Yaqub, an accountant, who had been wearing a bulletproof vest. He was later himself shot dead at the Chic Physique gym in Sparkhill, Birmingham as he exercised a year and a half later.
