Daniel Sullivan

Age: unknown

Sex: male

Date: 24 Aug 1908

Place: Royal Oak, Thames Place, Limehouse Hole, Poplar, London

Daniel Sullivan was killed in a robbery. Two men were tried for his manslaughter but the case against them was dropped although they were convicted of robbery.

He died after he was punched outside the Royal Oak public house in Limehouse. Although his friend was robbed, the court heard that the robbery and then the assault on Daniel Sullivan could not be proved to have been part of a joint enterprise to rob. The court heard that the robbery on Daniel Sullivan's friend, carried out by one of the men, took place first and that it was shortly after that that Daniel Sullivan was struck. Daniel Sullivan's friend had said that they had both been attacked and robbed at the same time, but another sober witness said that the robbery had been over at the time that Daniel Sullivan was struck. It was heard that it could not be proven that  both men were involved in robbing Daniel Sullivan or that the man who struck him had not acted in self-defence, as he had claimed.
