Sydney Smith was found behind some sheets of iron in Devonport Dockyard with his face beaten.
It was thought that he had been involved in a boxing match.
He was found bleeding from the nose and mouth and when he was examined by a doctor he was unconscious and suffering from head injuries and died soon after.
He had been an able seaman on a destroyer.
