Skeleton

Age: 60

Sex: female

Date: 16 Jul 1932

Place: Lepe, Calshot

The skeleton of a woman was found buried in the sand on the Lepe foreshore near Calshot.

The skeleton was found by a Southampton corporation bus driver.

After its discovery, extensive digging was carried out but revealed little else other than what had already been found out.

The skeleton was fleshless.

It was said that there was little doubt that the woman had been buried there.

A man's hatband was found nearby and was thought to be significant. On the hat band the words, 'Up to date. Our speciality', were impressed.

A gold bar turquoise and diamond brooch were found with the skeleton as well as a set of dentures, and dentists and jewellers were interviewed for the purpose of trying identify the owner.

It was thought that the woman had been in her 60's and had been about five feet two inches tall.

It was thought that it was probable that she had been a woman of fairly good circumstances because remnants of good quality fabric were found with her which was thought to have once been a blouse. The dentures and broach also suggested that the woman had been in a comfortable position in life.
