Florence Ada Ellis

Age: 32

Sex: female

Date: 9 Dec 1932

Place: 40 Burcot Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield

Florence Ada Ellis died from an illegal operation.

She had been performing with a group and was part of an act known as the Sisters Marple.

A woman that did music hall turns with her husband said that they were performing at a hotel in Grimesthorpe in early December 1932 and that a man that was hitherto a stranger had asked her if she knew the Sisters Marple. She said that the man then told her that Florence Ellis was lying ill in hospital and had said that it looked like someone had been playing about with her. She said that he then handed her an address and told her that if she liked she could come and see him there. The woman said that she took it to mean that he was soliciting for illegal operations noting that he had stated that girls from two other local theatres had been there for a day or two.

In court the man that the woman had spoken to and who lodged at 13 Draper Street in Grimesthorpe said that he had given the woman his address because he was getting her something to lighten her hair. He admitted that the two Marples Sisters had visited his home on various occasions, including the night before she was taken ill, and denied making any statements about other theatre girls.

Florence Ada Ellis was also known as Florence Ada Newsome.
