Charles MConaghy

Age: 46

Sex: male

Date: 24 May 1918

Place: Windsor Great Park, Berkshire

Charles MConaghy was found dead in Windsor Great Park.

He was a Canadian soldier.

At the inquest, a note had been sent with the body which read 'Private C. MConaghy picked up unconscious several hours ago. History of injury to head, bleeding from right ear and nose. Rumoured that he was sandbagged'.

The doctor that carried out the post-mortem said that Charles MConaghy had a clot on his brain and that there was a good deal of bruising on his right arm and elbow which he said might have been caused by him falling or by violence.

He said that the cause of death was apoplexy.

His widow received a letter from a sergeant which stated that her husband had been found sandbagged and unconscious. When she was at hospital, an officer asked to look at the letter and with her permission he retained it. However, at the time of the inquest she said that she had not yet received it back.

An officer at the inquest said that the troops were confined at the camp for 24 hours after Charles MConaghy's body was found in order that an investigation might be made. He said that as a result the military authorities came to the conclusion that Charles MConaghy had not met with any violence. However, the jury said that they were dissatisfied with his evidence.
