Albert Bowers

Age: 57

Sex: male

Date: 26 Nov 1998

Place: Cranford Street, Northampton

Albert Bowers died from a blood clot after being attacked in a street robbery in Northampton on Saturday 7 November 1998.

He was jumped on from behind and punched and kicked by two robbers in Cranford Street and his wallet stolen. The attack took place at about 10.40pm in Cranford Street near the junction with Hastings Road.

He had had £45 in his wallet stolen.

He had spent the night drinking in the Cock Hotel.

He died two weeks after the attack on 22 November 1998 in an ambulance on his way to Northampton General Hospital.

He had suffered four broken ribs and needed stitches to his face. He also had bruising to his head and body, and an injury to his left knee.

Between the time of the attack and his death he had been to the hospital three times.

However, after his death, the police said:

At this stage, we are trying to establish whether the cause of death is directly attributable to the attack. This is a frightening and particularly savage attack. These people must be caught. I'm very concerned that the two men were able to select a victim so much smaller and older than them and use such a horrific level of violence for the theft of £45.

The two robbers were described as:

Robber A.

  • Black.
  • Medium build.
  • Late 20s.
  • 6ft tall.
  • Short, cropped black hair.
  • Wearing dark coloured clothing, possibly denim.

Robber B.

  • Black.
  • Medium build.
  • Late 20s.
  • 5ft 7in to 5ft 10in tall.
  • Slightly longer hair in short dreadlocks.

Albert Bowers had been from Kingsthorpe and had been married.
