Jon Casey was stabbed outside the Lazeez Indian restaurant on Barrack Road at about 5.30pm on 16 January 2015.
It was thought that he had been involved in an altercation with two black men. It was heard that the altercation had spilled out into the road and that several cars had had to swerve to avoid the fighting men.
He was found by a member of the public and taken to Northampton General Hospital where he died soon after arrival at about 6.30pm.
The main suspect in his murder, a 21-year-old, was thought to have left the United Kingdom the following day on Saturday 17 January 2015. The 21-year-old, said to have originated from Coventry, had lived in Semilong Road at the time, and was said to have been a student at the University of Northampton. He was said to have returned home shortly after the murder and to have then left the country the following day, Saturday 17 January 2015.
Several people were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 19-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail but no further information is known.
The police appealed for anyone that might have seen anything in the Hester Street or Barrack Road areas, between 5pm and 5.30pm or anyone that saw any fighting, or a man being chased in the area of the old post office. It was thought that Jon Casey had been in the Semilong area of Northampton shortly before his murder.
The police said that they thought that the altercation had started in Hester Street and had then moved into Barrack Road.
Jon Casey had two children and had lived in Ecton Brook.
