Rachel Dunwell

Age: 59

Sex: female

Date: 2 Sep 1915

Place: Lindley Grove, Hunslet

Rachel Dunwell died after a street brawl.

She was a widow that had lived in Lindley Grove in Leeds.

It was said that Rachel Dunwell had remonstrated with a neighbour that was about to strike another old woman on 21 August 1915 but was then attacked herself, receiving two or three blows to her left temple. A number of people had been involved, all of whom either lived in Lindley Grove or Lindley Crescent.

She was then taken to the Beckett Street Workhouse in Leeds where she later died on 2 September 1915.

A doctor that carried out the post-mortem stated that she had a large blood clot over the left side of her brain. He said that it might have been caused by the excitement of the disturbance or directly due to violence.

The jury at the inquest returned an open verdict, saying that there was not sufficient evidence to show that her death was caused by a blow.
