Nora Penny

Age: 29

Sex: female

Date: 12 Sep 1915

Place: Peak Forest Canal, Dewsnap

Nora Penny was found dead in a canal.

She was a married woman and had lived in Newton street in Hyde, however, she had lived apart from her husband for the previous five years, although she had been keeping company with another man, a coremaker, for the previous 12 months.

Her body was found in the Peak Forest Canal on Sunday 12 September 1915.

The coremaker said that he went out with Nora Penny on the Saturday night for Ashton but said that when they got to Dewsnap they got off at her request. He said that when they got near to the bridge Nora Penny started speaking to another man who he said had also just got off the car and he made an arrangement with her to meet in Ashton later and he left her with the man. He said that when he left her with the man, Nora Penny had said to him, 'Don't be offended, as I have a few words to say to him, something very important'.

However, he said that she didn't meet him in Ashton.

He said that he didn't know the man and would not recognised him again.

When Nora Penny was found in the canal she was in an upright position.
