Jack Gudge

Age: 17

Sex: male

Date: 16 Jul 2016

Place: Wimborne Road, Winton, Bournemouth

Jack Gudge died after an altercation outside a Tesco supermarket in Wimborne Road, Winton, Bournemouth.

He was taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital where he later died.

His cause of death was said to have been brain injury and cardiac arrest, with alcohol being a contributory factor

He was said to have punched someone who then punched him back in self-defence. However, it was also said that after he fell, he was kicked in the head although the police said that there was no evidence to support that claim.

Four men were initially arrested on suspicion of his murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service later said they were of the view that they could not prove that the actions of the man who punched Jack Gudge were unlawful.

It was heard that he had been at a house party in Moordown with about 30 other people where he had been drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis and that after the party he had been walking along Wimborne Road with some other people when the altercation happened.

It was said that someone pushed Jack Gudge and that Jack Gudge, who was one and a half times over the alcohol driving limit, then punched someone and that he himself was then punched by another person in the mouth. However, it was said that there was evidence that that punch against Jack Gudge had been made in self-defence.

It was heard that Jack Gudge had said, 'come on, come on', as though he was looking for trouble.

It was said that the punch that Jack Gudge had received had lifted him off the floor. It was also claimed that Jack Gudge had been kicked in the head and legs, but the police said that there was no evidence for that. At the inquest, a witness said that he saw two men kick Jack Gudge in the head, whilst another said that he saw Jack Gudge being kicked in the legs by three men. Jack Gudge was described after the fight as being 'blue, with his eyes up into the back of his head'.

It was said that when he was punched, he had flopped down to the ground like there was no weight in his body.

The police later said that there was insufficient evidence for a realistic chance of conviction and the four men who had been arrested on suspicion of murder were released without charge.
