Christopher Swarray was shot in his VW Golf car in Ladywood.
He was said to have been a member of the Gooch Close gang.
He had been on trial the year before for the shooting of a man in Old Trafford on 5 November 1997. In the shooting, gunmen had burst into the man's house on Fernleigh Drive, and fired three shots, one of which had gone through his spine leaving him paralysed from the waist down. At the trial it was heard that the shooting had been gang related between the Doddington gang and the Gooch Close gang. However, he was acquitted.
Another 26-year old person that had been in the car with him at the time of the shooting survived.
