Anthony John Curtis was found dead in the River Irwel.
He had been convicted of the manslaughter of Ben Kamanalagi, along with another man, in 2003 and at the time he had been on home leave from prison, having only five months left to serve.
He had gone missing on 8 June 2005 and was found in the River Irwell on Sunday 19 June 2005.
The police said that they were treating his death as suspicious.
His post mortem proved inconclusive.
He was last seen leaving the Sports Bar on Quay Street, Manchester, not far from the river. He was found about half a mile away in the river in a lock.
When last seen he had been wearing a blue Armani T-shirt, dark jeans, and black shoes.
Anthony Curtis had had two children.
