Eldton Henry

Age: 76

Sex: male

Date: 26 Aug 1992

Place: Grosvenor Road, Whalley Range, Manchester

Eldton Henry was killed in his home in Grosvenor Road, Whalley Range.

He was found by neighbours on the afternoon of Wednesday 26 August 1992, at about 8pm, lying in the hallway of his home after they became concerned when callers could get no answer from his house. He was found with a black bag over his head and his wrists handcuffed and ankles tied.

A neighbour said, 'I looked through the letter box and I saw Henry on the floor'. They then smashed the door in to get in but found him to be dead. The neighbour said, 'He was handcuffed, his legs were tied and a black piece of material was tied over his head. When I saw him I panicked and ran back out and fell over in the street'.

His post mortem stated that his death was due to asphyxiation and that he had also received blows to the head.

He had been last seen earlier on in the day at about 2pm.

It was thought that he dealt in cannabis to supplement his pension. He had lived in a terraced house. Neighbours said that he was known to supply soft drugs in order to boost his pension but to have not dealt in hard drugs.

His house was said to have been ransacked.

His murder was said to have rocked the neighbourhood, where Eldton Henry was described as a well-known and friendly, quiet man who would sit on his garden wall and chat to passers-by.

A neighbour said, ‘He'd lived alone here since the 60s. He was supposed to be going home to Jamaica. He said he wanted to go at the end of this month, but it wasn't a firm date. He had put his house up for sale because he had decided to live with his sons and grandchildren in Jamaica'.

The police said that he had had convictions for drugs possession and that one of their theories was that he had been murdered by someone looking for drugs money.
