Herbert Thomas Rowntree

Age: 38

Sex: male

Date: 10 Jan 1913

Place: Manor Park Station, Manor Park, London

Herbert Thomas Rowntree was found dead on the line at Manor Park Station.

He was a screw maker’s manager and had lived in Wordsworth Avenue, East Ham.

It was heard that he had been out of work at the time and had gone out to go to the East End.

A man said that on the Friday night he had been at Manor Park station waiting for a train when he noticed a bundle of something on the line and said that when he looked more closely, he saw that it appeared to be a man's body.

A porter that then went to have a look said that the body was about 30 yards from the platform and was badly mutilated.

The coroner said that Herbert Rowntree had taken a ticket from Manor Park to Ilford and said that it was a question of whether Herbert Rowntree had gone to the wrong platform and had been knocked down whilst passing over the crossing used by the staff.

An open verdict was returned.
