Frank Gilby fell out of a train.

He was a music-hall artiste and had lived in Kentish Town, London and was a member of an American Rag-Time company.

He fell out of an express train early on the Sunday morning, 22 December 1912, near Doncaster.

His company had been in Hull the previous week and on the Saturday night, at 11.30pm they left by train for King's Cross.

However, Frank Gilby was suddenly missed near Doncaster and the door to the compartment was found open and the communication cord was pulled, and the train pulled up near Red Bank, south of Doncaster.

The guard on the train was told that Frank Gilby had fallen out an it was later found that he had been run over by a pilot engine and his body fearfully mutilated.

Members of the American Rag-Time company who Frank Gilby was with said that Frank Gilby had been perfectly sober when they saw him at Selby and said that he was a very steady man.

The guard and a carriage examiner said that the carriage lock was in good working order, noting that it was a safety lock with two catches.

An open verdict was returned.
