Jaymie Hall

Age: 35

Sex: male

Date: 27 May 2017

Place: 65 Dumbryden Gardens, Wester Hailes, Edinburgh

Jaymie Hall was stabbed at his home at 65 Dumbryden Gardens in Edinburgh on 27 May 2017 at about 9.25pm. He was taken to hospital where he died shortly after.

A man was tried for his murder but a verdict of not proven was returned.

The man tried said that another man, who died towards the end of 2017, did it. He said that he had been watching the football with the other man at the flat and that Jaymie Hall had come in and that they had had an argument and that Jaymie Hall and the other man then went out at which point the other man stabbed Jaymie Hall.

It was not known how old the other man was or how he died, but the reports stated that he 'passed away' towards the end of 2017.

The man was also charged with having attempted to defeat the ends of justice by concealing the knife used in a nearby bin but the charge was similarly found not proven. It was also alleged that he had told his son and the other man he accused of murdering Jaymie Hall to give the police inaccurate and untruthful details regarding what had happened.

He said that on the day of the murder that he and the other man had been watching the Scottish Cup final on the television and that Jaymie Hall arrived later that evening.

The man tried noted that the other man had beaten Jaymie Hall in the weeks leading up to the murder but that Jaymie Hall had also recently assaulted the other man resulting in him needing medical treatment. He said, 'Jaymie told me he had stamped on him'.

The man on trial said that when Jaymie Hall came in whilst they were watching the football that Jaymie Hall told the other man that he was not going to apologise for attacking him and that they had then started arguing.

He said that Jaymie Hall then left the flat after which the other man followed him out and that he then saw the other man stab Jaymie Hall outside on the flat landing.

The man on trial said, 'I saw him unsheathing the knife and he came towards Jaymie and made a stabbing motion with the knife. I couldn’t believe what I saw. It happened so quickly. Jaymie was going out the double doors. I said 'Jaymie come back'. He says he's going to see his mum. Jaymie didn't look right. The other man is standing there. He's saying 'what have I done, what have I done?'. Jaymie then comes back towards me. He doesn’t look right. His legs buckled. He lowers his arm and a lot of blood comes out and he falls to the ground. I immediately ask somebody to phone for an ambulance. The other man meanwhile is standing there at the door and all he can say is 'what have I done, what have I done?''.

At the trial the man's 17-year-old son said that he called the police after finding Jaymie Hall injured. He said, 'Jaymie was lying on the floor. His feet were outside my dad’s door. Jaymie was lying flat on his back. There was quite a lot of blood underneath him and around him. He didn’t look as if he was in pain. He was breathing a little bit heavy'.

The man on trial admitted having lied to the police during the investigation. At the trial he said, 'It’s something I regret. I was trying to protect my friends, one of them had been stabbed and the other one had carried out the attack'.

However, he added that the other man had also given the police false statements during the investigation that had caused him to be arrested.

He added that when he found out that the other man had died, 'I was angry that he wasn’t going to be here in court and that he wasn’t going to answer questions about his false statements'.

The man and Jaymie Hall had been childhood friends.
