Severed Head

Age: unknown

Sex: male

Date: 16 May 2016

Place: Mepal, Cambridgeshire

A man's severed head was found in a quarry at Mepal by a quarry worker.

It was thought that he had died around 10 years earlier.

Forensic experts that examined the remains said that they thought that it belonged to a man aged between 30 and 50 and that he could have died as far back as the 60s.

The police said that they were unable to identify who the head had belonged to and that there was nothing that could help them link it to any known criminal cases.

A DNA sample was taken, but the National Crime Agency said that they were unable to link it up with any matches in their database.

Whilst it was not known how the man had come to die, the police said that it was possible that he might have been hit by a train in Bedfordshire. The police said, 'We believe the head may have been lodged somewhere along the structure of the bridge in Sharnbrook, and as part of the recent cleaning process has been dislodged, found its way into the skip and deposited at the quarry in Mepal'.

The police said that they had closed the case but would reopen it if any more information came to light.
