Infant A

The bodies of two newly-born infants were found in the loft of a house.

The police surgeon that carried out the post-mortem said that the first body was that of a female and that the presence of air in its lungs indicated that it had had a separate existence. He said that there was also evidence of an attempt to burn the body. He also said that the condition of its lungs indicated that the cause of death was asphyxia.

He said that the second child was also that of a newly-born child and that it was completely mummified and dried up and in such a shrivelled condition that it was impossible to ascertain the sex or to discover its cause of death.

The doctor added that he thought that the first child had been dead for about six weeks but that there was probably a gap of two years between the birth of the two children.
