Chris Coady was ambushed by a gang armed with machetes and hacked to death near the Platford Pub on Stretford Road.
A man was arrested and charged with his murder but the charge was later dropped due to lack of evidence. The man that was charged with his murder was later convicted of another murder in Hulme in 2003.
His murder was described as a gangland killing.
He was still alive when paramedics arrived and was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police said that his murder was connected to territorial battles amongst young drug dealers in the area.
They said that Chris Coady had been attacked by a gang of three or four men that had the lower parts of their faces covered.
He had been on his way to the Three Legs of Man pub near his home in Empress Court at about 10pm when he was attacked near the Platford pub which is now closed.
