James Wilston

Age: 93

Sex: male

Date: 19 Jul 1901

Place: High Street, West Barnet

James Wilston was run over by a straw cart.

He was found in High Street in West Barnet on 9 July 1901 lying partly on the pavement opposite the Crown and Anchor pub by a greengrocer. The greengrocer said that James Wilston asked him to go to the police station for assistance, saying that he had been run over by a cart laden with straw. He said that it had been a cart drawn by a brown horse and that the carman had got off and pulled him onto the path and then gone off saying that he would fetch assistance but didn't do so.

He was taken to the Barnet Workhouse Infirmary where he later died on 19 July 1901.

His post-mortem revealed that he had died from shock following a compound fracture to both bones in his right leg.

The Coroner said that it was a very un-English act on the part of the driver to leave James Wilston without getting assistance.

An open verdict was returned.
