Hang Yin Leung

Age: 64

Sex: female

Date: 11 Feb 2017

Place: Orne Gardens, Bolbeck Park, Milton Keynes

Hang Yin Leung died from a heart attack 11 days after her house was burgled during which she was assaulted.

She was hit over the head in her home in Milton Keynes on 31 January 2017 and died 11 days later on 11 February 2017. The attack took place three days before Chinese New Year.

Hang Leung had been well enough to give a statement to the police on 1 February 2017 but fell ill whilst doing so and was admitted to hospital where she died eleven days later from a heart attack. Her inquest heard that the burglars had probably played a role in her death and the inquest concluded that it might have been brought about as a result of the burglary.

The assistant Coroner said, 'She had been admitted to the hospital on 1 February 2017 having become unwell when giving a statement to the police about an assault she had suffered during a burglary the previous day. It is probable that the assault played a role in her death'. He also said, 'Hang Yin Leung died at Milton Keynes University Hospital on 11 February 2017 from multiple organ failure as a result of complications of reclusive sheath haematoma. She had been admitted to the hospital on 1 February 2017 having become unwell when giving a statement to the police about an assault she had suffered during a burglary the previous day. It is probable that the assault played a role in her death'.

It was said that her home had been broken into by six masked men who had called at the house at about 6pm. She had said that they had been wearing balaclavas and gloves. Hang Leung had been at home at the time as she had taken the evening off work. She said that they had then forced their way in and threatened her with an ice pick. One of the men was said to have beaten her about the head with his hands. The men were described as cold callers.

In her statement, Hang Leung had said, 'Male one pushed me down to the floor of the lounge and used an ice pick to threaten me. I struggled and he used his hand to hit me three to four times to the back of my head. They asked me a few times 'money money,' but I did not respond. I was not injured, but my heart was jumping very fast. After fifteen minutes they came down from upstairs'. She said that one of the men held his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming and that although she had fought back, she had been over-powered. She said that when they left they had been 'singing and being happy'.

Hang Leung was 5ft 2in tall.

The men then ransacked the house, stealing cash and jewellery although it was said that they fled after Hang Leung chased them off. Amongst the items stolen was Hang Leung's long service medal that she had been awarded by the Hong Kong police and a distinctive gold 1991 Rolex watch. The men were said to had left laughing and to have taken bags of stolen items, including Hang Leung's family's life savings.

Four men were arrested in connection with her murder, but no one was charged. The police said that there was no forensic evidence to identify the attackers. They said, 'There was no forensic opportunity at the house. No DNA, no fingerprints left at the scene by the suspects. There was no CCTV evidence in the vicinity. House to house inquiries were carried out, but nobody heard anything. We couldn’t show who had been there'.

Three men had been found to have been in a van in the area at the time and were arrested, but there was no evidence against them.

Another man was arrested after he was found to have exchanged Canadian and Hong Kong dollars.

Hang Leung had run the Jade Gardens Chinese takeaway in Walnut Tree, Milton Keynes with her husband but had planned to retire.

She was from Hong Kong where she had formerly been a police officer for 18 years. She had come to the United Kingdom in 1991 for a quieter life and had worked in restaurants, and later took over the Jade Gardens Chinese takeaway but had planned to retire shorty and return to Hong Kong after travelling the world.

A television documentary about her murder was made and aired by Channel 4 in May 2018.
