Philip Wong

Philip Wong was attacked at the door of his Mercedes car in Rose Street by three men armed with machetes on 9 October 1985.

He was a business man and had run the Lucky Star restaurant in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. He had also made money with a video rental sideline and had business interests in Perth, Stirling and Edinburgh.

He was attacked just after he had left a gambling school at Tin Tin Bookshop in Rose Street. It was noted that matchsticks had been placed in his door lock to distract him and give his killers more time to attack him. 

After killing him, the gang got in a car and drove off south along the M8. It was thought that they then went to Birmingham or got a ferry to Northern Ireland.

The police investigation was said to have centred round the theory that he had been the victim of a Triad death squad intent on revenge for his involvement in a major extortion trial in the city in 1979. It was also thought that he had been attacked because he had refused to do a business deal with the Triad group the Wo Shing Wo. It was also later suggested that he had been involved with a rival gang, but his family denied that.  

The police released a photofit of a suspect. He was described as 6ft tall, well-built and smartly dressed, wearing a dark suit.

However, the police said there was a wall of silence around his murder.

It was noted that a police officer who had been an ethnic liaison officer within the Chinese and Asian community and who had known Philip Wong was removed from the role after it was heard that there were credible death threats against him following his part in the investigation. 

Philip Wong had arrived in Scotland in 1958 and had a wife and three children. He had lived near Barrhead town centre.
