Mohamed Kakay was stabbed at the back of St Giles Church in Camberwell, London on Saturday 19 November 2016.

After being stabbed in the abdomen he was able to stagger out to the front of the church and into Camberwell Church Street before collapsing near Wilson Road.

The police said that they thought that Mohamed Kakay had spent the night in a flat in Wilson Road and that the following morning he had walked down Wilson Road with two suspects and that the three men had then gone into the gardens at the rear of St Giles Church where Mohamed Kakay was then stabbed. The police said that they thought that he was attacked by two the suspects.

A person that was passing gave Mohamed Kakay first aid until an ambulance arrived at about 9am after which he was taken to King’s College Hospital where he died later that afternoon. He had died from puncture wounds to his heart and liver.

Mohamed Kakay was supposed to be at work that morning, but never made it.

The police said that they thought that his murderer had been around the area of Wilson Road, Camberwell Grove and Camberwell Church Street and the roads leading off from those routes between 9am and 9.30am on Saturday 19 November 2016, and appealed to anyone that had been in the area at the time and seen anything to come forward. They also appealed for anyone else that had been in the area recording video footage with bike helmets, dashboard cameras or mobile phones to similarly come forward.

A total of six people were arrested in connection with his murder, but they were all later released without further action.

A 36-year-old man was arrested at the time by the police, but later eliminated from their investigation and released. Two other men were also arrested around that time and also both released without charge.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in December 2016 but also later released.

In August 2017, a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested on suspicion of his murder, but also later released.

Mohamed Kakay had three children and was originally from Sierra Leone. He had come to the UK as an asylum seeker and had first been to Birmingham and then later moved to Bromley in London.

He was murdered a few days before his 34th birthday.
