Baby

A baby was found in a telephone box.

It was wrapped up in two garments.

A note was later sent that read, 'Please have body of newly-born baby found in telephone-box by bus-driver in Fetter Lane baptised before burial'. It was addressed to the 'Chaplain' and was all written in block letters. On the back of the envelope were stamped the figures '119'.

A doctor at the inquest said that he was of the opinion that the cause of death was suffocation due to a person’s left hand having been pressed over the infant's nose and mouth.

The police said that every effort had been made to trace the mother, as well as the writer of the anonymous letter, but had failed.

The verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown was returned.
