Phylis Nora Green

Phylis Nora Green died from the result of a miscarriage on 5 August 1935.

Her death was due to peritonitis following interference.

She had lived in Forest Road in Skegby and was admitted to the Nottingham General Hospital on 4 August 1935 following a miscarriage and died the following day.

Her post-mortem revealed that there was more than a possibility that an instrument had been used by a third party. The doctor that carried out the post-mortem on 7 August 1935 said that her death was due to acute peritonitis following infection brought about by mechanical interference. He added that he thought that it was improbable that the interference was done by Phylis Green herself.

A police inspector who was in charge of the inquiries concerning her death said that he had interviewed a number of people and said that generally in cases of that type there was usually someone suspected but said that in Phylis Green's case there was not the slightest suspicion resting on anyone.

Her husband, who was an electrician, said that although they lived together in the same house, they did not live together as man and wife and added that he was not the father of the child.

Phylis Green's mother said that her daughter had come home on 17 July 1935 and told her of her condition and said that she seemed troubled. However, she said that she could throw no light on where or by whom the interference took place, adding, 'It was certainly not at my home'. She said that Phylis Green then went to bed unwell and that she then attended to her but said that she had no idea that she had had a miscarriage.

The Coroner said that the evidence was mostly of a negative character, noting that Phylis Green was ill pleased with her condition and that the paternity was in dispute.

An open verdict was returned.
