Gertrude Warde

Age: 59

Sex: female

Date: 6 Jul 1935

Place: Meadow Farm, Chaddesden

Gertrude Warde was found dead in a canal. Her handbag was missing.

She had lived at 28 Powell Street in Derby and had gone out to do some shopping at 9am on the Saturday 6 July 1935, taking her handbag with her.

Her body was found later that evening.

Her husband said that she had had a severe illness in the spring but that she had made a good recovery and showed no signs of depression. Her doctor said that he had attended her in April 1935 when she was suffering from delusions but said that she had made a good recovery and noted that he had not been called to see her in the last three months.

He thought that she had been overcome by the heat and had fallen into the canal where she had become entangled in an undergrowth of reeds.

However, the policeman that recovered Gertrude Warde's body from the canal said that he had not found any of her belongings along the towpath.
