Norman Depledge was found in the canal.

He was a miner from Moor Ends in Silkstone Common and had gone missing on 14 August 1935. He was found in the canal on 21 August 1935.

At the time he went missing he had six days' wages awaiting him at the colliery.

His wife said that he had been in regular work and had no worries and said that she knew of no reason why he might drown himself or how he came to be in the vicinity of the 'Thirty Two Steps' where he was found, which was a bridge over the canal near to Barugh Mill.

He was of medium build, stood about 5ft 1in tall and had dark, wavy hair. He had been wearing a brown suit, bowler hat, black shoes, a black tie and a blue and brown striped soft collar.
