Jack James Johnson

Age: 21

Sex: male

Date: 5 Aug 1935

Place: Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley

Jack James Johnson was knocked over by a car whilst cycling to Blackpool.

The police were unable to trace the driver.

When the Coroner summed up he said, 'On the last occasion I said that I considered that a motorist who knowingly collided with anybody and then went on was a cad. I did not think that expression was strong enough. Exception has been taken because I have been told it is not right to call anybody a cad who is not here. I am convinced that the person responsible knows he had been involved in an accident and from the publicity given that man has been killed. I am not going to call him a cad today. I am going to call him worse than that if I can find a word strong enough. He is a despicable and inhuman person'.

Jack Johnson had lived on Litchfield Street in Pendleton.
