Walton Howard was found dead in a swamp on Dartmoor in November 1934.
He was identified by his mother by his wristlet watch, wallet, manicure set and necktie. A knife and a bottle were found near his body but tests on them revealed nothing.
He was a leather worker with a Bolton leather works and had disappeared from his home in Warrington on 25 August 1934.
The police said that all efforts to trace his movements after he had left home, his belonging and money were fruitless.
He was said to have had no love affairs, quarrels or enemies and otherwise had no worries.
After his body was found it was buried in Postbridge but later exhumed after he was identified and transferred by a motor-hearse to Warrington where he was again buried.
An open verdict was returned at his inquest.
