William Alan Corner was run over.
He was found on the verge on the side of the Great North Road in Allerton at about 9.30pm, seriously injured by a police constable. He was taken to the Harrogate and District General Hospital where he was found to have suffered a fractured skull and a fractured thigh and later died.
It was thought that he had been hit by a car travelling south. The police said that they were keen to trace the driver of a dark brown saloon car that was believed to have been a Standard. They said that the car had left Kelly's Cafe in Boroughbridge at about 9.20pm on the Saturday night, saying that it would have crossed the scene of the accident at about the time that it occurred.
It was stated that all police forces in Yorkshire had been concerned and hundreds of cars were examined in attempts to trace the driver of the car believed to have caused his injuries.
William Corner had been a farm foreman at Oatlands Farm in Walshford. He was married and had seven children.
An open verdict was returned at his inquest stating that, 'Corner died from shock caused by multiple injuries received by being struck by a motor-car, the driver of which is unknown'.
