John William Whitehead was found in Ilford by the police in a drunken condition and taken to the police station but the following morning he complained of feeling ill and was taken to the Romford Union Workhouse where he later died.
His post-mortem revealed that he died from heart failure and apoplexy and that he was shockingly injured on the left shoulder and ribs and had his left arm broken with the bone having been driven up into his armpit.
The inquest said that there was no evidence on how he came to be injured but the Coroner censured the Ilford divisional police surgeon and Superintendent nurse for not having more carefully examined him at the police-station and allowing him to wait for two hours without a doctor.
