Lily Montgomery

Age: 44

Sex: female

Date: 14 Feb 1937

Place: Penzance Terrace, Providence Row, Hull

Lily Montgomery died from a septic abortion.

She was taken to the Hedon Road Maternity Hospital where she died on 14 February 1937.

Her inquest heard that there was the suggestion that she had been taking drugs and using an instrument, but that could not be known for certain and an open verdict was returned.

The inquest also heard from a married man from Hull that had met Lily Montgomery on a ship to Ostend in 1928 on a holiday trip who spoke of his relations with her, admitting that he had been intimate with her on several occasions. He said that she came to him early in the new year and made a statement but said that the only suggestion that he made to her was that she should go to a doctor to find out about her condition.

Her doctor said that Lily Montgomery came to see him on 2 February 1937 complaining of pains in her head. He said that he issued her with a certificate to say that she was suffering from infuenza and added that he had no reason to suspect anything else, and said that he told her to let him know if she got worse.

He said that he later visited her and found that she had relapsed.

The doctor said that the following day a man came to see him and asked how Lily Montgomery was, but the doctor said that he could not discuss his patient's conditions. He said that the man then told him that he could have told him something about her.

Lily Montgomery was later that evening ordered to the Maternity Hospital and later died.

When the Coroner summed up he said that it seemed a pity that Lily Montgomery could not have been more open and told the doctor about her condition when she had called him in.
