The body of a newly-born female child was found under the seat of a railway carriage.
It had been wrapped up in a brown paper parcel and pushed under the seat in a railway compartment at a station outside of Derbyshire.
It was found by a man that got on the train at Sheffield at 5.15 who said that there had only been one other person in the compartment and that they had got out at Dore and Totley. He said that he then noticed the parcel under the seat and when he got to Dronfield where he lived he handed it into the station-master.
The station-master said that the train had been a slow train from Bradford that had stopped at twelve stations.
Death was stated as being due to suffocation and was not due to natural causes. The doctor that examined the child said that the child was a fine well-developed child and said that it had lived for a few minutes before being suffocated.
The doctor said that he didn't know how it had been suffocated but said that the child’s face had been flattened as though some pressure had been applied.
