Date: 26 Apr 1938

Place: Messrs Williamson and Hogg, Chemists, Union Street, North Shields

The body of a newly-born child was found in a paper carrier at the rear of the premises of Messrs Williamson and Hogg, Chemists, in Union Street, North Shields.

The package was found by a man that had been to visit the chemists. He said that he had been there on the previous Saturday and Monday but had seen nothing then. He said that he went there on the Tuesday, 26 April 1938 when his attention was drawn to it and said that when he looked inside he saw a cloth and that when he pulled the cloth away he found the child's body.

It was noted that the premises of the chemists were bounded on three sides by a six-foot-tall wooden fence with barbed wire at the top.

The doctor who examined it said that he thought that the child had lived for only a few minutes.

He said that the child’s skull was also fractured on the left side of the head and that its lower jaw was also fractured. However, he said that he could not see any bruising on the child's skin.

He said that he thought that the child had probably died from neglect and that he thought that it had been dead for about two months.
