Place: Beaver Hill Road, Handsworth, Sheffield

The body of a newly-born child was found in a brown paper bag at the side of Beaver Hill Road in Handsworth, Sheffield.

It was found by an unemployed labourer who was walking along Beaver Hill Road on the Tuesday night on the side of the road in Handsworth Nurseries. He said that he thought that it was a bundle of clothes, but that when he opened the bag he found the body of a child wrapped up in newspapers and some clothes.

When a policeman examined the parcel, he said that he found the number 33 in the corner of a newspaper that was found near to where he found the body of the child, but was unable to trace it after making enquiries at newsagents in the area.

A doctor said that its death was due to concussion caused by either a fall or a blow.
