Frederick Walter Read was shot in the back during an alleged suicide pact with his girlfriend near Cuffley railway station on 30 May 1939.

His girlfriend was tried for his murder, but no evidence was offered, and she was acquitted. She was however convicted of attempted suicide and bound over for two years and to be under a probation officer's supervision.
