Alex Vanderpuye was stabbed in Christie Road, Hackney. He was found in the street at about 4.45pm on Thursday 7 December 2017 and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5.20pm.
His post mortem gave his cause of death as being due to a stab wound.
The police said that they thought that Alex Vanderpuye had ben stabbed by one of a group of men that had arrived at the scene in a metallic green Mercedes car. The Mercedes was later found and eight men were arrested on suspicion of murder on 12 December 2017 but later released.
The police later appealed for anyone that had been in the area at the time to come forward, noting that the Christie Road area was busy at the time and there had been lots of people about.
It was reported in 2008 that Alexander Vanderpuije, 15-years-old at the time, was convicted of rape and false imprisonment and sentenced to 6 years for his part in a revenge gang rape of a girl earlier in 2008. The revenge rape had been carried out by nine youths and all counts of rape were said to have been oral rape. It was reported that each of the youths had taken it in turn to raped the 14-year-old girl whilst recording it on their mobile phones in flats on the Frampton Park Estate in Hackney and that the attack was said to have taken 90 minutes. The gang were described as all being junior members of the Kingzhold Boys gang. It ws said that they had snatched the girl and raped her after she had insulted one of the youths to their girlfriend.
It was further noted that a man that had given evidence against the rape gang at the trial, Abraham Badru was himself shot dead in Ferncliff Road at 11pm on 25 March 2018. His murder is also unsolved. A man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but was later released although the police said that they thought that it was possible that Abraham Badru's murder had been a case of mistaken identity. However, his mother said that she thought that he was murdered in revenge for testifying against the rape gang.
